How do Engine Km’s compare with truckmount hours?
By Jerry McKillip, Prochem USA
Most of us know that almost any machine needs periodic maintenance to the get the longest life and most efficient performance. Although a truckmount does not travel down the road, its components are subject to the same stress and wear as components on a vehicle.
When your truckmount runs at 2,500rpm, it is comparable to driving a vehicle at 110 kph, therefore each hour of operation would be the same as travelling 110km. When a truckmount has clocked up 100hrs on the hour meter, that is the equivalent of driving 11,000 km, 1000 hours 110,000 kms, 2000 hours 220,000 km, and so on.
Now lets take a look at the manufacturers suggested preventative maintenance for a vehicle at 100,000 kms. You would have replaced all of the tyres at least once, had the front end aligned perhaps, changed the oil and filters many times, greased the chassis several times, replaced the belts at least once, replaced the battery, changed the engine air filter four or five times, had the engine tuned up, repacked the wheel bearings and serviced the transmission. The list could go on. Of course your truckmount doesn’t have tyres, butmany of the items listed above, including belts, filters and battery are components of a truckmount and similar maintenance could be required to keep your truckmount running to manufacturers specifications. To be sure the correct preventative maintenance is being performed, refer to your operator’s manual and follow the guidelines.
